To broaden the application of the basalt fiber in the preventive maintenance of asphalt pavement, this study investigated the bonding performance and evaluated the comprehensive performance of the basalt fiber asphalt macadam seal. Firstly, different types of basalt fiber asphalt macadam seal were prepared. The influences of content and length of the basalt fiber and dosage of emulsified asphalt on the bonding performance of the asphalt macadam seal were analyzed and compared. Next, by using the efficacy coefficient method, comprehensive performance considering both mechanical and economic characteristics of the basalt fiber asphalt macadam seal was evaluated. After that, reasonable content of each material was determined. Finally, the strengthening mechanism of the fiber on the bonding performance of macadam seals was revealed from a microscopic view. The results showed that compared with the ordinary asphalt macadam seal, the loss aggregate rate of the basalt fiber asphalt macadam seal was 11.0–30.5% lower, and the pull-out strength, shear strength, and torsional shear strength were 11.7–16.3%, 9.7–22.4%, and 4.2–20.6% higher, respectively. Considering the bonding performance and economic benefits, the optimal amount of emulsified asphalt and basalt fiber was 1.6 kg/m2 and 70 g/m2, respectively. Basalt fiber increased the cohesion of the asphalt material and improved the bonding performance of asphalt macadam seals through formation of the three-dimensional network structure. This study can provide reference to the application of basalt fibers in asphalt pavement maintenance.

Controlling the Thermal Stability of Kyanite-Based Refractory Geopolymers

The present project investigated the thermal stability of cold-setting refractory composites under high-temperature cycles. The proposed route dealt with the feasibility of using fillers with different particle sizes and studying their influence on the thermo-mechanical properties of refractory geopolymer composites. The volumetric shrinkage was studied with respect to particle sizes of fillers (80, 200 and 500 µm), treatment temperature (1050–1250 °C) and amount of fillers (70–85 wt.%). The results, combined with thermal analysis, indicated the efficiency of refractory-based kyanite aggregates for enhancing thermo-mechanical properties. At low temperatures, larger amounts of kyanite aggregates promoted mechanical strength development. Flexural strengths of 45, 42 and 40 MPa were obtained for geopolymer samples, respectively, at 1200 °C, made with filler particles sieved at 80, 200 and 500 µm. In addition, a sintering temperature equal to 1200 °C appeared beneficial for the promotion of densification as well as bonding between kyanite aggregates and the matrix, contributing to the reinforcement of the refractory geopolymer composites without any sign of vitrification. From the obtained properties of thermal stability, good densification and high strength, kyanite aggregates are efficient and promising candidates for the production of environmentally friendly, castable refractory composites.

The Ni and Ti contents of industrial silicon has a signi cantly affect the of organic silicon. On the basis of large speci c production data, the chemical component of silica and the carbon-reducing agent effect of the Ni and Ti contents of silicon were investigated using statistical techniques. Two furnaces were also studied-an 8.5 MVA furnace and a 12.5 MVA furnace. The effects of TiO 2 and NiO impurities on the power consumption of both furnaces were also evaluated using the correlation of the TiO 2 and NiO impurities in raw materials with speci c power consumption. The consumption of raw materials exhibited a high negative correlation with the TiO 2 and NiO impurities in industrial silicon, as determined by linear regression-that is, 82% < |r| < 99%. The in uence of Ni on industrial silicon production was also stronger than that of Ti.With an increase in Ni, the power consumption of the 8.5 MWA furnace signi cantly decreased, whereas that of the 12.5 MWA furnace is increased. Adjusting the content of Ni content can reduce the power consumption of industrial silicon production in the large furnace.
