because the transition metal (Ni, Co, and Mn) ions dissolve from the cathode active materials and the side reactions occur with the electrolyte, resulting in poor cycling performance. [9][10][11][12] Furthermore, the LiNi 0.8 Co 0.10 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) material shows secondary crystal cracking and volume expansion under a fully charged state, which is enough to cause an expanding crack near the grain boundary inside the particle, so it causes poor cyclic stability. [13] The research shows that the volume expansion and contraction of NCM811 can reach 3.9% during the delithiation/lithiation process, which is enough to cause an expanding crack near the grain boundary inside the particle. [13,14] Continuous new cracks in the material particles expose fresh surfaces and continue to react with the electrolyte, resulting in pulverization of the electrode materials and battery failure. The surface of LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) cathode is coated with Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 with a thickness of 10-12 nm by the solvent evaporated calcination method to generate T2-NCM811 cathode, which significantly reduces the particle cracking. The cyclic stability of the T2-NCM811 cathode is greatly improved by particle-stabilized structure. After 500 cycles between 2.8 and 4.3 V, its capacity retention rate is 83%, which is higher than that of NCM811 (67%). This cyclic stability is attributed to the inhibition of secondary crystal cracking by the coating, which the structure of the particles is kept stable in a long period and protects the internal particles from harmful electrolytes. The discharge capacity of NCM811 cathode at 10C is 92.6 mAh g −1 , while that for T2-NCM811 cathode raises to 111.5 mAh g −1 . This is because a certain amount of Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ doping to the surface of NCM811 reduces Li/Ni mixing and increases the lattice parameters on the surface of material; this helps to accelerate the electronic conductivity and enhance the transport of Li + .

In recent years, with the rapid development of electric vehicles, the ever-fluctuating cobalt price has become a decisive constraint on the supply chain of the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery industry. To address these challenges, a new and unreported cobalt-free (Co-free) material with a general formula of LiNi0.8Fe0.1Mn0.1O2 (NFM) is introduced. This Co-free material is synthesized via the coprecipitation method and examined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the morphological, crystal-structure, and electrochemical properties. The NFM cathode can deliver a specific capacity of 202.6 mA h g–1 (0.1C, 3.0–4.5 V), a specific energy capacity of 798.8 W h kg–1 in material level (0.1C, 3.0–4.5 V), a reasonable rate capability, and a stable cycling performance (81.1% discharge capacity retention after 150 cycles at 10C, 3.0–4.3 V). Although the research on this subject is still in its early stage, the capability of this novel cathode material as a practical candidate for applications in next-generation Co-free lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is highlighted in this study.
