High Performance Graphene Oxide Based Rubber Composites

Abstract: In this paper, graphene oxide/styrene-butadiene rubber (GO/SBR) composites with complete exfoliation of GO sheets were prepared by aqueous-phase mixing of GO colloid with SBR latex and a small loading of butadiene-styrene-vinyl-pyridine rubber (VPR) latex, followed by their co-coagulation. During co-coagulation, VPR not only plays a key role in the prevention of aggregation of GO sheets but also acts as an interface-bridge between GO and SBR. The results demonstrated that the mechanical properties of the GO/SB… Show more

“…In addition to silanes, elastomer grafts or functionalized elastomers may act as compatibilizers for the elastomer nanocomposites. For example, SBR/GO compatibilized with vinyl pyridine-styrene-butadiene rubber (VPR) exhibited improved gas-barrier properties [101]. The EPDM/OMMT nanocomposites were compatibilized using EPDM-g-MAH.…”

“…GO can be exfoliated into single layers in water because the sheets have various oxygenic functional groups. Thus, GO is readily incorporated into rubbers using latex technology [101,102]. To prepare electrically conductive nanocomposites, GO must be converted into graphene upon reduction.…”

“…This creates a tortuous path mechanism of gas diffusion process. In another work, graphene oxide is considered as fillers in preparing SBR composites adopting a solution process [11]. In this work a small amount of butadiene-styrene-vinylpyridine rubber (VPR) latex is used as coupling agent between rubber chains and graphene oxide.…”
