High-Nuclearity Lanthanide–Titanium Oxo Clusters as Luminescent Molecular Thermometers with High Quantum Yields

Abstract: Three heterometallic lanthanide-titanium oxo clusters (LnTOCs) formulated as EuTi(μ-O)(tbba)(acac) (EuTi, 1, Hacac = acetylacetone), EuTi(μ-O)(tbba)(Htbba)(THF) (EuTi, 2), and EuTi(μ-O)(Ac)(tbba)(HO)(THF)(Htbba) (EuTi, 3) were prepared through the reactions of 4-tert-butylbenzoate (Htbba), rare-earth salts, and Ti(OPr). The solution luminescence investigation discovered a size-dependent quantum yield phenomenon in solution. A solid-state luminescence study showed that these three LnTOCs display temperature-dep… Show more

“…Because the intensity of the Eu is independent on the local environment, the intensity ratio of these two signals can be employed to probe the local coordination environment of Eu 3+ . 28 In this case, the ratio for Eu-1 solid-state sample was determined to be around 14.8, satisfactorily matching with that from solution (i.e., ca. 14.9).…”

“…Lanthanide‐transition metal (3d–4f) clusters combine 4f and 3d metal elements and have attracted widely attention because of their unique optical, electronic, magnetic and catalytic properties . In terms of catalysis, 3d–4f clusters were regarded as promising photocatalytic materials due to the synergistic effect between the 4f and 3d ions .…”

“…Lu et al . synthesized several europium‐titanium oxo‐clusters that exhibit these properties . The clusters were formed in a reaction with t‐butlybenzoic acid, Eu(aca) 3 , and Ti(OPr) 4 , and the structures were confirmed by X‐ray crystallography.…”
