“…The earliest reported clinical use of HIFU was for treatment of Parkinson's disease (Fry et al 1954). Clinical applications include treatment of renal tumors (Wu et al 2003b;Marberger et al 2005;Kohrmann et al 2002), prostate cancer Thuroff et al 2003;Blana et al 2004), liver cancer (ter Haar et al 1989;Yang et al 1993;Kennedy et al 2004) and breast cancer (Wu et al 2003aGianfelice et al 2004), among others. In the 1980's our research group used HIFU for treatment of glaucoma (Coleman et al 1985;Burgess et al 1986;Silverman et al 1991) and ocular tumors Coleman et al 1986).…”

“…Longer term results from experienced sites are also available. In a recent report, Gelet and co-workers 16 presented results from 120 patients who were followed up for at least 36 months. In this series, the complete response rate, as defined by negative biopsies and a stable PSA at the nadir value, was 77.4%.…”

“…It is noted that the rate of relapse-free and overall survival of patients with prostate cancer have remained unchanged for several decades (12-24 and 24-36 months respectively) [12]. The second and third lines of hormone therapy, chemotherapy are effective only in 15-20% of cases and does not lead to a significant increase life expectancy of patients, while possessing significant side effects [4,5,6].…”

“…While in Russia only 35% of patients are candidates for surgical treatment because of the prevalence of detected tumors, comorbidities and age [2]. Therefore attention of scientists aims is to examine the developed and implemented into clinical practice new effective minimally invasive treatments for prostate cancer such as conformal radiotherapy, brachytherapy, ultrasound ablation and cryotherapy [4]. However, due to the fact that studies analyzing the effectiveness of HIFU-therapy for prostate cancer with a cohort of sufficient size and statistical power is few, the real work done.…”
