“…For the gender factors, Lopez et al (2017) determined that retinopathy in women are more common related to retinopathy in elderly patients with T2DM. 23 Another retrospective study also found that women were more likely to have retinopathy than men 24 , the results of which matched the results of this study. The estrogen production could regulate ocular blood flow to protect the retina; and its antioxidant effects were the primary protective effect on the lens.…”

“…Therefore, the prevalence of DR in patients would rise substantially when the patient's diabetic durations were over 10 years. 27 Some studies also found that the longer duration of diabetes, the higher chance of retinopathy appeared; with impact on the risk of DR. 17,24,28 The result of those studies were corresponding to our study. Therefore, well controlled earlier could prevent and delay the progression of DR in patients with diabetes.…”

“… 32 Atorvastatin is an effective and safe treatment for hyperlipidemia in Taiwanese diabetic patients. 33 In the present study, we found that adjuvant treatment with atorvastatin was associated with a significant decrease in serum levels of TC, TG, and LDL levels as well as serum hs-CRP levels. Hs-CRP was a cardiovascular risk predictor in type 2 diabetics with normal lipid profile.…”

“…3,[29][30][31] Our study shows that presence of diabetic retinopathy is higher in patients with high levels of HbA1c, a finding similar to a study done previously in Taiwan. 32 Our study had the limitations of a relatively small number of patients and the accuracy of DR grading based on clinical diagnosis, compared with grading based on seven field stereo fundus photography. The latter limitation may be compensated for by the fact that all examinations were conducted by the same group of medical personnel in one medical centre.…”
