“…A manual PMB method and a segmented flow analyzer (AutoAnalyzer3, AA3 method) were used as reference methods for the micromolar-level samples. The description of the online monitoring and underway sampling of surface seawater appears in our previous publications. …”

“…Recently, we developed a fully automated integrated syringe-pump-based environmental-water analyzer ( i SEA), which uses a syringe pump and multiposition selection valve to overcome the drawbacks of the current batch and continuous flow analyzers . The i SEA is portable and robust, and it has been successfully applied to the underway analysis of ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate in coastal areas. The i SEA has features similar to the very recently developed programmable flow injection techniques, such as using tens of microliters of reagents per assay and a calibration response that is independent of the salinity of the samples, and the system does not use peristaltic pumping .…”

“…In the determination of ammonium, the indophenol blue (IPB) method based on the classic Berthelot reaction is the most widely used spectrophotometric method [17]. Recently, a modified IPB method, replacing toxic and odorous phenol with o-phenylphenol (OPP), was reported [18][19][20][21]. The analyzer developed by Li et al [19] was used for the online monitoring of ammonium.…”

“…Recently, a modified IPB method, replacing toxic and odorous phenol with o-phenylphenol (OPP), was reported [18][19][20][21]. The analyzer developed by Li et al [19] was used for the online monitoring of ammonium. In the gas-diffusion-based methods, an acid-base indicator (e.g., bromothymol blue, nitrazine yellow) is used, and the color change is measured spectrophotometrically.…”

“…The standard photometric measurement of ammonium and sulfides (DIN ISO 15923-1 (D49) and DIN 38405-D27 (D27)) are off-line measurements that require specific chemical reagents as well as a photometer for measurements. Although efforts have been made to automate the sampling and measurement process [9], the development of a system based on low-cost electrochemical sensors could achieve the following: drastically reduce costs, eliminate the need for chemical reagents, and increase the frequency of measurement.…”
