High fat diet and high polyphenols beverages effects in enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant activity

Abstract: Grape juice showed to be the most effective in minimizing the deleterious effects of a high fat diet. Resveratrol did not present any benefit and red wine possibly shows a harmful effect due to ethanol content.

“…This specific response depends not only on ROS levels but also on the tissue (Ribeiro et al. 2017 ). GSH is an endogenous defense against the oxidative stress that can act with GST and GPx enzymes or in the process of lipid peroxidation.…”

“…44 High-molecular-weight phenolics derived from red grapes could effectively reduce the harmful impacts of a high-fat diet and play an important role in scavenging free radicals. 45 Resveratrol administration effectively lowered the level of fasting blood glucose and raised high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. 46 Consuming a diet of plant extracts rich in phenolics appears to have similar effects.…”

“…Additionally, they significantly reduced levels of lipid peroxidation and carbonylated protein, and lowered oxidative stress levels in both plasma and tissues 44 . High‐molecular‐weight phenolics derived from red grapes could effectively reduce the harmful impacts of a high‐fat diet and play an important role in scavenging free radicals 45 . Resveratrol administration effectively lowered the level of fasting blood glucose and raised high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C) levels 46 .…”

“…In vitro studies suggest that polyphenols have the ability to inhibit lipoxygenases and cyclooxygenases prevents the release of arachidonic metabolites, an alternative source of non-mitochondrial ROS [38]. They are also able to increase the activity of potent antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT, and GPX [39]. Antioxidant activity is correlated positively with the number of hydroxyl groups bound to the aromatic ring [40].…”
