High eye‐quality improvement by a single‐SOA regenerative wavelength converter

Abstract: A simple all-optical cross-gain modulation (XGM) wavelength conversion scheme based on a single semiconductor optical amplifier with higher regeneration capabilities is presented. A proof of concept was performed at data rates from 0.6 to 13.5 Gbps for NRZ streams using the KyaTera/FAPESP buried fiber optical testbed. Good results were obtained for large lambda-detuning (>10 nm), including conversion to the same wavelength. The best experiments achieved an improvement in the quality factor (Q-factor) over 4 un… Show more

“…Different deterioration cases were obtained by combining these elements. The block for regeneration and wavelength conversion is the last one (Ribeiro et al, 2009a). In this block the modulated signal at λ 1 was converted to the wavelength of the laser 2 (λ 2 ), occurring regeneration and wavelength conversion simultaneously.…”

“…Two deterioration cases are studied. The first case is "LINK+SOA", which presented a medium quality input signal ( Figure 5(a)) with Q-factor of 5.7, presenting intense pulse distortion due to the intrinsic dispersion caused by the 18-km standard buried fiber link (Ribeiro et al, 2009a). The dispersion effect could be noted by the triangular form of the pulse.…”
