High-Entropy Alloys as Catalysts for the CO2 and CO Reduction Reactions: Experimental Realization

Abstract: The high entropy alloy (HEA) nanoparticles have been prepared using cast cum cryo-milling process. In which, the Au, Ag, Pd, Pt and Cu (99.9 at. % pure, Alfa Aesar, USA) melted under argon environment to synthesize cast HEAs and afterwardcast HEA have been milled in cryomill for 6 hours. The detailed synthesis process can be found elsewhere. 1 The cryomilled powder (HEA nanoparticles) has been characterizedin order tothe crystalline phase, size, chemical homogeneity, composition, and catalyst activity. The X-r… Show more

“…[67] HEAs have also been reported to efficiently catalyze the OER, [68] the HER, [69] as well as electrochemical reduction of CO and CO 2 . [70,71] For electrochemical CO 2 reduction, the prospect of tuning the surface reactivity of HEAs by changing their composition makes it possible to tailor the surface sites optimized for specific products. A HEA comprising AuAgPtPdCu was reported to achieve CO 2 conversion into gaseous hydrocarbons, including CH 4 and C 2 H 4 , with a high faradaic efficiency close to 100 % ( Figure 6), and it was attributed to a reversal in the adsorption trends of two intermediates, *OCH 3 and *O, out of eight possible intermediates, compared to the their adsorption on a Cu(111) surface.…”

[71] The emergence of HEA seems to fulfil the concept of a designer surface envisioned by Bockris and Minevski, where different patches of a multielement surface are optimized to catalyze specific steps in a complex reaction mechanism involving many intermediates. [72] With each atom surrounded by at least four other dissimilar atoms in its close vicinity, the unique electrocatalytic properties of HEAs are attributed to the unique interactions of the neighburing elements, and their ability to act concertedly in an interdependent manner.…”

“…13,[26][27][28][29][30] However, the traditional method mainly produce bulk HEAs rather than nanostructures. 26,[31][32][33][34] Moreover, the preparation of uniform nanostructured HEAs with small size (< 10 nm) currently requires speci c equipment (fast heating/cooling rate, ~10 5 K per second), high temperature (~2000 kelvin), and high temperature resistant and conductive substrate (carbon nano ber), such as carbon-thermal shock method. 35 In this work, we synthesized the small size (~3.…”
