High-Dose Tramadol in Comparison to Low-Dose Morphine for Cancer Pain Relief

Abstract: Cancer pain treatment following the World Health Organization guidelines is effective and feasible. However, the evidence supporting the use of opioids for mild to moderate pain on the second step of the analgesic ladder is widely discussed. The present evaluation compares the efficacy and safety of high doses of oral tramadol (> or = 300 mg/d) with low doses of oral morphine (< or = 60 mg/d). Patients were included in this nonblinded and nonrandomized study if the combination of a nonopioid analgesic and up t… Show more

“…8 Grond S et al, in a study compared the efficacy and safety of high dose tramadol and low dose morphine for mild to moderate cancer pain and observed high dose tramadol to be equally effective and safe for mild to moderate cancer pain as low dose morphine. 9 Morphine is the mainstay and gold standard strong opioid of choice (Hanks G et al). 10 It is used to treat pain of high intensity that is not responsive to non-opioid combination.…”

“…Grond et al in a retrospective study [19] compared the analgesic efficacy and safety of high doses of tramadol (!300 mg) with those of low doses of morphine ( 60 mg) administered orally without randomization or blinding. The study treatment was started when the daily dose of tramadol up to 250 mg with a non-opioid analgesic was ineffective.…”
