Aveloz (firestick cactus; Euphorbia tirucalli L.) belongs to Euphorbiaceae family, characterized by the production of a toxic latex that has corrosive effects on the skin and mucous membranes. Continual topic use of the latex is recommended by popular medicine to treat warts, and epitheliomas. To validate this indication, ultra diluted latex and homeopathic medicine Euphorbia tirucalli were tested in vitro on the proliferation of melanoma cells. Ultra diluted latex was prepared in homeopathic dilutions 5cH, 15cH and 30cH by dilution and agitation (trituration for solid and sucussion for liquid phases) using 70Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Âº GL (Gay Lussac) ethylic alcohol (70Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Âº GL EtOH 70Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ÂºGL) as inert medium according to the guidelines in FarmacopÃƒÆ’Ã‚Â©ia Homeopática Brasileira (FHB). Homeopathic medicine Euphorbia tirucalli was prepared from mother-tincture according to the centesimal Hahnemannian method. Solutions 0.5% and 5% of 70Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ÂºGL EtOH were succussed and used as control. Human melanoma cells were cultured, treated and monitored by method MTT for 24 to 72 hours. It was observed that 0.5% 70Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ÂºGL EtOH solution had little or no effect on the proliferation of melanoma cells (5.1% maximal inhibition in dilution 30cH). Positive correlation was observed in most groups between inhibition of proliferation and diluted preparations, maximal increase (9%) was seen in with 5% latex. Moreover, mother-tincture proved to be more active than latex; treatment with 0.5% solution of latex 30cH exhibited 19.7% inhibition, whereas treatment with 0.5% solution of Euphorbia tirucalli 30cH exhibited 32.1% inhibition of cell proliferation (p

Latex-bearing plants have been in the research spotlight for the past couple of decades. Since ancient times their extracts have been used in folk medicine to treat various illnesses. Currently they serve as promising candidates for cancer treatment. Up to date there have been several in vitro and in vivo studies related to the topic of cytotoxicity and anticancer activity of extracts from latex-bearing plants towards various cell types. The number of clinical studies still remains scarce, however, over the years the number is systematically increasing. To the best of our knowledge, the scientific community is still lacking in a recent review summarizing the research on the topic of cytotoxicity and anticancer activity of latex-bearing plant extracts. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to review the current knowledge on in vitro and in vivo studies, which focus on the cytotoxicity and anticancer activities of latex-bearing plants. The vast majority of the studies are in vitro, however, the interest in this topic has resulted in the substantial growth of the number of in vivo studies, leading to a promising number of plant species whose latex can potentially be tested in clinical trials. The paper is divided into sections, each of them focuses on specific latex-bearing plant family representatives and their potential anticancer activity, which in some instances is comparable to that induced by commonly used therapeutics currently available on the market. The cytotoxic effect of the plant’s crude latex, its fractions or isolated compounds, is analyzed, along with a study of cell apoptosis, chromatin condensation, DNA damage, changes in gene regulation and morphology changes, which can be observed in cell post plant extract addition. The in vivo studies go beyond the molecular level by showing significant reduction of the tumor growth and volume in animal models. Additionally, we present data regarding plant-mediated biosynthesis of nanoparticles, which is regarded as a new branch in plant latex research. It is solely based on the green-synthesis approach, which presents an interesting alternative to chemical-based nanoparticle synthesis. We have analyzed the cytotoxic effect of these particles on cells. Data regarding the cytotoxicity of such particles raises their potential to be involved in the design of novel cancer therapies, which further underlines the significance of latex-bearing plants in biotechnology. Throughout the course of this review, we concluded that plant latex is a rich source of many compounds, which can be further investigated and applied in the design of anticancer pharmaceuticals. The molecules, to which this cytotoxic effect can be attributed, include alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, proteases, nucleases and many novel compounds, which still remain to be characterized. They have been studied extensively in both in vitro and in vivo studies, which provide an excellent starting point for their rapid transfer to clinical studies in the near future. The comprehensive study of molecules from latex-bearing plants can result in finding a promising alternative to several pharmaceuticals on the market and help unravel the molecular mode of action of latex-based preparations.

This chapter represents the historical record of the stages of the third management of the intercultural didactic garden (medicinal and sensory) in a courtyard used by the Homeopathy Service, located in the 7th Infirmary of the Hospital Geral Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil, whose elaboration was inter - transdisciplinary and intersectoral, voluntary and cooperative, with the purpose of cultural appreciation and intercultural and interethnic experience, as a way of promoting well-being and mental health through the preservation of intangible heritage, which is the knowledge of the people. The doctor and naturalist, who brought Homeopathic Medicine to Brazil at that time, cared for members and families of traditional ethnic communities and enslaved indigenous peoples or, when they no longer served, those left to fend for themselves. Therefore, from this stage completed in primary care, scientific initiations were carried out with the plant elements of the Benoit Jules Mure medicinal garden, ranging from in situ morphological knowledge to the pharmaceutical process using the Hahnemannian method of multiple bottles, to investigate circumscribed environmental issues . Scientific investigations were started with Calendula officinalis, Euphorbia tirucalli, Annona muricata. For the present stage described here, the germination of Cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata) was investigated, originating from Africa and used to this day by Quilombola Traditional Knowledge, selected based on a bibliographical review. Cowpea grown in this garden in cups with an high ultra-diluted and energized (HUD) 5DH Sulphur solution, as directed for organic garden cultivation in Rio de Janeiro, has broad potential for clinical scientific research in nutrition and the environment, also for phytoremediation. This study, with the use of streamlined solutions, thus contributed to expanding the perception regarding the positive and enriching role of cultural diversity and also biodiversity, helping both to reduce the risk of food shortages for those in urban situations in Rio de Janeiro, as well as in awareness of ethical behavior of care for everything that makes up the environment (Environmental Ethics) and Cultural Competence.
