“…To the Editor: We thank Dr Rick and colleagues for their insightful commentary on our article published in the December 2020 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. 1 The extensive clinical experience of Rick et al 2 with patients in the United States having both hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and atopic dermatitis (AD) is in tune with the association between these 2 inflammatory dermatoses shown in our controlled observational study on Israeli patients. The awareness of the possibility of the co-occurrence of HS and AD is important for health care resource allocation and patient-oriented interdisciplinary management.…”

“…The repeated observations of comorbid HS and AD in the patients at our specialty clinics in Israel prompted us to explore the behavior of each disorder along the course of the other disorder in a large population-based cohort. 1 We noted a larger-scale phenomenon of an increased burden of atopic diathesis spectrum diseases (AD, asthma, and allergic rhinitis) among patients with HS and their family members. The systematic analysis confirmed our clinical impression and allowed for further stratification of the data into at-risk subgroups (Israeli Arabs).…”

“…To the Editor: We read with great interest the recent article titled ''Hidradenitis Suppurativa and Atopic Dermatitis: A Two-Way Association'' by Sherman et al 1 published in the December 2020 issue. The authors presented data of over 6000 hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) patients and 30,000 matched controls in a large, retrospective cohort study.…”

“…Additionally, those with pre-existing AD had a 40% increased odds of developing HS. 33 Other studies have reported that the odds of developing HS were five times higher in patients with AD than when compared to normal controls. 32,34 AD is an autoinflammatory syndrome with a demographic profile similar to HS as both conditions largely affect both females, and skin of color patients, and likewise, tobacco use has been identified as a known risk factor in AD.…”

Other studies have reported that the odds of developing HS were five times higher in patients with AD than when compared to normal controls 32,34 …”
