The Albanian Alps are situated in a mountainous block in the Northern Albania region, in the counties of Shkodër (also known as Shkodra or Gegëria) and Kukës (Kukësi). The nature of the mountainous terrain formation has led to the creation of isolated communities. The need for integrating these scattered communities into a cohesive co-operating community for area sustainability is now possible by using the Internet to link them all onto an online system. To deal with natural catastrophes, disaster management cells will be created which will serve as hubs. These hubs will be located at geographically strategic positions that will enable a predetermined geofenced region for evaluation of different disasters viz. forest fires, landslide, flooding, avalanches, the burial of villages under heavy snowfalls, etc. These cells will connect the particular case with the most appropriate disaster relief, rescue service and EMR (Emergency Medical Responder), first aid services (e.g. Green Crescent/Red Cross) and EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) personnel. The cells shall be managed by locally trained human resources with the necessary equipment to provide the monitoring/analyses and first aid assistance in case of need. The technology needed for the monitoring and geotechnical management of the isolated Alpine communities will be described. The socio-economic impact of the deployment of these technologies aiding in the sustainability of these vulnerable communities will conclude the research.

In Southeast Asia, rising population, economic growth, and lack of land supply in the city core have led to the widespread irreversible land cover transformation in peri-urban areas. Such extensive and haphazard urban growth in peri-urban areas raises concern about analyzing and promoting planned urban growth. Therefore, this paper attempts to assess land cover changes from 2001 to 2021 and delineate peri-urban areas of a midsized Indian city, i.e., Thiruvananthapuram Urban Agglomeration (UA) using geoinformatics. The maximum likelihood supervised classification tool in ArcGIS 10.3 was used to prepare land cover maps for 2001, 2007, 2014, and 2021. Further, the presence of urban sprawl in the peri-urban areas was detected through Shannon’s entropy index. The urban sprawl typologies in the peri-urban areas were quantified using the adjacent neighborhood relationships concept. The results revealed rapid growth in built-up land cover and decline in non-built-up land cover within Thiruvananthapuram UA during the study period. Peri-urban areas were delineated based on nine indicators, such as total population, population growth, population density, literacy rate, percentage of the male workforce, percentage of the female workforce, agricultural land cover, distance from urban core, and percentage of cultivators to agricultural workers. A rise in Shannon’s entropy index from 1.59 in 2001 to 2.05 in 2021 exhibited the occurrence of rapid urban sprawl in the peri-urban areas. Dominance of discontinuous low-density development, i.e., scatter development typology of urban sprawl, was observed in peri-urban areas of Thiruvananthapuram UA. Such studies using geoinformatics would assist local governments in scientifically formulating sustainable urban policies and plans.

Many dynamic interactions within the cell microenvironment modulate cell behavior and cell fate. However, the pathways and mechanisms behind cell−cell or cell−extracellular matrix interactions remain understudied, as they occur at a nanoscale level. Recent progress in nanotechnology allows for mimicking of the microenvironment at nanoscale in vitro; electron-beam lithography (EBL) is currently the most promising technique. Although this nanopatterning technique can generate nanostructures of good quality and resolution, it has resulted, thus far, in the production of only simple shapes (e.g., rectangles) over a relatively small area (100 × 100 μm), leaving its potential in biological applications unfulfilled. Here, we used EBL for cell-interaction studies by coating cell-culture-relevant material with electron-conductive indium tin oxide, which formed nanopatterns of complex nanohexagonal structures over a large area (500 × 500 μm). We confirmed the potential of EBL for use in cell-interaction studies by analyzing specific cell responses toward differentially distributed nanohexagons spaced at 1000, 500, and 250 nm. We found that our optimized technique of EBL with HaloTags enabled the investigation of broad changes to a cell-culturerelevant surface and can provide an understanding of cellular signaling mechanisms at a single-molecule level.
