Hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine: An Emerging Contaminant in German Rivers

Abstract: Hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine (HMMM)-containing resins are used in the production of coatings and plastics for cans, coils, and automobiles. A previous study demonstrated that this compound was associated with acute toxic effects on daphnia. This study presents the first compiled data on the occurrence of HMMM as an emerging contaminant in German rivers. The compound occurred in 60 of 117 water samples from three river systems, with concentrations ranging between <10 and 880 ng/L. Based on water concentrations a… Show more

“…HMMM and related compounds have been previously identified in wastewater and surface water [2,3,44]. A widespread presence of HMMM in German rivers was reported by Dsikowitzky and Schwarzbauer [13] with a huge temporal and spatial variation and maximum concentrations of up to 880 ng/L in the Mulde river. Furthermore, we detected several "rare" and high-intensity peaks with molecular formulas and retention times similar to those of HMMM (e.g.…”

“…Based on an external calibration curve ( Figure S9) and the assumption that we archived 100% extraction efficiency via SPE and no significant ion suppression, we estimate the highest concentrations observed in our study (Peak Area = 2.1E8) to be between 1 and 10 ng/L. Hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine is a chemical component in resins used for coatings and plastics and has been described as a pollutant in rivers with acute fish and daphnia toxicity 58,59 . Interestingly, the relative abundance of Irgarol was higher in December before the rain (max Peak Area = 1.4E8) but only in the sample sites directly in the marina.…”

“…Hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine appeared to drive the compositional distance between samples taken close to freshwater outflows. Hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine is a chemical component in resins used for coatings and plastics and has been described as a pollutant in rivers with acute fish and daphnia toxicity (Dsikowitzky and Schwarzbauer, 2015;Labunska et al, 2012). Based on an external calibration curve ( Figure S6) and a standard addition experiment ( Figure S7), we conclude that the extraction efficiency is only around 0.3% for Hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine.…”
