Non-targeted tandem mass spectrometry enables the visualization of organic matter chemotype shifts in coastal seawater

Abstract: Anthropogenic pollutants inundate marine ecosystems as human population growth and urbanization rapidly increase along the coast. The analytical methods applied to detect anthropogenic imprints in coastal seawater are historically aimed at measuring and monitoring a restricted number of compounds. More recently applied non-targeted approaches are typically still limited by spectral and structure library coverage. To prioritize anthropogenic impacts in marine systems beyond compounds present in libraries and su… Show more

“…DOM constituents were ionized in positive or negative electrospray ionization (ESI) mode. ESI settings were as described previously 14,17 : In short, gas flows (in AU) were set to 52 AU (sheath gas), 14 AU (auxiliary gas), and 0 AU (sweep gas); spray voltage was set to 3.5 kV, inlet capillary was heated to 320 °C; S-Lens level was at 50%. MS1 spectra were acquired with a scan range of 150-1,500 m/z at a nominal resolution of 140,000 at m/z 200 and automatic gain control (AGC) set to one million charges.…”
