Given the heightened importance of revolutionising 4D BIM-based construction scheduling in modular construction, it has become vital to explore how 4D-BIM could be integrated with the lean concept. Therefore, this research aims to develop a lean-integrated process model to revolutionise the 4D BIM-based construction scheduling in modular construction projects. A case study approach was used to obtain the data. The data was obtained using semi-structured interviews with construction scheduling professionals, site observations, and extracts from the BIM model used within the selected case in the UK. Findings showed that conventional (component/object based) 4D BIM supersedes conventional scheduling methods in terms of foreseeing potential implications during design and construction. The findings also showed that lean-integrated 4D BIM in modular construction have different considerations when compared with component/object-based scheduling. A lean-integrated 4D BIM process model was developed from the analysis and it was validated using an interactive workshop with eight participants from two UK construction companies and two modular construction manufacturers. The developed process model identified a number of considerations for 4D BIM in modular projects including constructability, operations, health and safety risks and time. This study suggested the further potential of 4D BIM in scheduling for modular construction projects.

Proactive project scheduling aims to generate robust baseline schedules that are protected against the potential schedule disruptions during project execution. In this paper, we propose a new problem named the proactive resource-constrained project scheduling problem with activity split-ting and resource transfer times, and try to investigate the trade-off between the benefits of activity splitting and the drawbacks of the resulting more resource transfer times. The proposed problem is formulated into an integer programming model with considering the constraints of a maximum allowed number of splitting and a minimum period of continuous execution. Since the problem is NP-hard in the strong sense, a genetic algorithm is then developed for problem solving. From the obtained results of a designed computational experiment, we prove that the developed genetic algorithm is effective in solving the defined problem, and the benefits of activity splitting to schedule robustness improvement can be weaken with the resulting more resource transfer times among the subactivities. Besides, with the increase of the maximum allowed number of activity splitting, the decrease of the minimum continuous execution time, the decrease of resource transfer times, and the extension of project deadlines, schedule robustness increases.

Bridge agencies are often challenged to develop maintenance programs under given budgets. Numerous studies developed budget-allocation models for maintenance programs during defined planning horizons of multiple fiscal years while totally ignoring the crucial aspect of cash flow. The payment schedules (both timing and amount) for contractors might indicate agencies’ cash needs that exceed the available budgets during certain fiscal years, which create cash flow problems. While numerous finance-based scheduling (FBS) models were developed to manage cash flow for contractors, this function was totally overlooked for portfolio owners. Thus, this research reintroduces the FBS from the perspective of portfolio owners. A FBS model is developed to schedule the activities of the portfolio projects, utilize the schedules to define the payment schedules of projects’ contractors, calculate the agencies’ cash needs during the fiscal years, and utilize the multi-objective optimization algorithms of NSGA-II, SPEA-II, and MOPSO to optimize the projects’ schedules to achieve a balance between the cash needs during the fiscal years and the available budgets. The anticipated extensions in projects’ completion represent the conflicting objectives. Finally, the optimized schedules make the contractors’ payment schedules affordable by the agencies’ budgets, which help to complete projects successfully and achieve the programs’ strategic goals.
