Heterotopic pregnancy after a single embryo transfer

Abstract: Heterotopic pregnancy is a rare and life-threatening condition which is defined as coexistent intrauterine and ectopic gestation. The risk of ectopic and heterotopic pregnancy is increasing due to the increased risk of multiple pregnancies with the aid of assisted reproductive technologies. However, it hardly happens in the setting of single embryo transfer, since single embryo transfer significantly reduces the incidence of multiple pregnancies. “…The first reported case of HP after SET was reported in 2015 by Gergolet et al 7 In our search for previous cases of HP after SET in PubMed using the terms "single embryo transfer" and "heterotopic pregnancy" up to January 31, 2021, we found three HP cases after SET. [7][8][9] Herein, we reviewed four cases, including our case (Table 1). In all four cases, the patient had SI during the ART treatment, which means that SI may be the cause of HP after SET.…”

“…2 However, assisted reproduction techniques are associated with significantly higher rate of heterotopic pregnancies reaching from 0.2% to 1% rate. 3 Furthermore, risk factors for heterotopic pregnancy include history of tubal surgery, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, and intrauterine device implantation. 1…”
