Social work literature on the topic of gay and lesbian identity development is sparse. Although some texts do include sections on social work practice with gay and lesbian individuals, rarely is this information presented within the broader context of the history of sexuality and contemporary gay and lesbian theory. Practitioners, students, and researchers often have to look outside the field to find resources on this topic. In an effort to advance social work literature, this article provides a comprehensive description of gay and lesbian identity development and recommendations for advancing the literature.

Trends in contemporary social work include the use of an eclectic theory base. In an effort to incorporate multiple theories, this article will examine the social problem of homophobia using two different theoretical perspectives: John Rawls' theory of social justice and lesbian feminist theory. Homophobia, a current social problem, can be defined as "dislike or hatred toward homosexuals, including both cultural and personal biases against homosexuals" (Sullivan, 2003, p. 2). Rawls' theory of justice and lesbian feminist theory are especially relevant to the issue of homophobia and provide a useful lens to understanding this social problem. In this article, these two theories will be summarized, applied to the issue of homophobia, and compared and contrasted based on their utility.

Educational Correlates of Antigay Bias: A Survey of Australian Social Work Students

The study reported here examined three educational correlates of students’ attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women: coursework prior to attending the university that included information about sexual minorities, coursework at the university that included information about sexual minorities, and identification with one's degree. Undergraduate students enrolled in social work courses in an Australian university were surveyed. Of the three correlates examined, two variables— exposure to education prior to attending the university and identification with degree— were significant, but only in relation to attitudes toward gay men. The relationship with previous education about sexual minorities is remarkable in that it seems counterintuitive: Those who reported more exposure to education about sexual minorities prior to attending the university exhibited greater bias against gay men; however, the effect size was small. Consistent with study hypotheses, greater identification with one's degree was correlated to less antigay bias. Implications for social work education are considered.
