“…Empirical research and experimentation on education commons are limited in comparison to other forms of commons. There are some schools and communities (Means et al, 2017 ; Pechtelidis, 2018 ; Pechtelidis and Kioupkiolis, 2020 ) where a process of commoning education has been developed through the construction of alternative spaces for learning and participation where democracy, self-governance, social justice, and equality are promoted. In the educational commons, participants (adults and children) engage in alternative social relations, which foster new forms of subjectification (Biesta, 2011 ) and “citizenship.” Two concrete examples come from Greece: the Little Tree community in Thessaloniki (Pechtelidis and Kioupkiolis, 2020 ) and the Sprogs community in Volos (Pechtelidis, 2018 ), both formed by a group of preschool children, parents/guardians, and educators or pedagogues.…”

“…Sus discursos narran disconformidades con aquellos modelos educativos que únicamente muestran opciones políticas predeterminadas y desde los cuales se intenta que los pequeños/as se conviertan en seres socialmente controlables con roles políticos y económicos esperados. Es así como estas opciones desafían el paternalismo tradicional de la educación que se fundamenta en el no reconocimiento de los derechos y autonomía de los niños/as (Pechtelidis, 2018).…”

“…In the realm of independent Educational commons, notable examples from Greece include the Sprogs community in Volos (Pechtelidis, 2018), Mikros Dounias on Lesvos Island (Tsilimpounidi et al, 2019;Varella, 2024), Children's Orchard in Panagitsa, Pella (Chronaki & Lazaridou, 2023), and the Little Tree community in Thessaloniki (Pechtelidis & Pantazidis, 2018a;Pechtelidis & Pantazidis, 2018b;Pechtelidis & Kioupkiolis, 2020). These initiatives embody autonomous (pre)school education deeply rooted in commons principles, qualifying as educational commons spaces.…”
