Heterogeneous sono-Fenton-like process using nanostructured pyrite prepared by Ar glow discharge plasma for treatment of a textile dye

Abstract: The plasma-treated pyrite (PTP) nanostructures were prepared from natural pyrite (NP) utilizing argon plasma due to its sputtering and cleaning effects resulting in more active surface area. The NP and PTP were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. The performance of the PTP was greater than NP for treatment of Reactive Red 84 (RR84) by the heterogeneous sono-Fenton process. The … Show more

“…6 demonstrates that the mentioned AOPs processes follow the pseudo-first order kinetic, which is in agreement with previous studies [6]. The apparent pseudo-first order rate constants (k app ) for the AB92 degradation were estimated from ln (A 0 /A t ) against time (t) plots and presented in Table 3.…”

“…It should be noticed that, the total leaked iron concentration was lower than 1 mg/L after heterogeneous sonoFenton-like process using the BMM 3 under pH range of 3 to 9. At this low level of leached iron, generation of • OH radicals would be mostly due to the heterogeneous process as opposed to the homogeneous one in the bulk solution for the AB92 removal [6,32].…”

“…To treat polluted soils, underground waters and wastewaters, catalytic heterogeneous processes employing magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ), hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ), goethite (a-FeOOH), and magnetite (g-Fe 2 O 3 ) have been utilized widely in recent years. These sort of solid catalysts have significant potential to degrade resistant organic pollutants (e.g., dyes and phenol compounds) [19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…The Fenton process is one of the most studied AOPs and other processes derive from it as electro-Fenton (Oturan et al 2001;Pimentel et al 2008; Barhoumi et al 2016), photoFenton (Trabelsi-Souissi et al 2011Bouafia-Chergui et al 2012;Romero et al 2016), sono-Fenton (Sundararaman et al 2009; Chakma and Moholkar 2013; Khataee et al 2016), and so forth. Nevertheless, it still shows some contradictory results regarding the ideal conditions to obtain high Responsible editor: Philippe Garrigues * Antover Panazzolo Sarmento antoverps@ufg.br efficiencies on the pollutant degradation (Hermosilla et al 2015).…”
