Heterogeneous modification of chitosan via nitroxide-mediated polymerization

Abstract: International audienceChitosan (CS) was modified by SG1-based nitroxide-mediated polymerization under heterogeneous conditions. After introduction of acrylamide and/or acrylate functions onto the CS backbone followed by intermolecular 1,2 radical addition of the BlocBuilder alkoxyamine (CS–BB), methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of a small amount of acrylonitrile (AN) or sodium 4-styrenesulfonate (SS) was polymerized by nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP). ESR and free-solution capillary electrophor… Show more

“…The procedure of elaboration of this alkoxyamine has already been described elsewhere [28]. Briefly, the synthesis of the cello-SG1 alkoxyamine is performed in two steps: (i) acroylation of one hydroxy function of cellobiose to graft one acrylate function, (ii) intermolecular 1,2-radical addition (1,2-IRA) of the SG1-based BlocBuilder MA alkoxyamine onto the acrylate function.…”

“…We have also used CE to assist in the grafting of synthetic polymers, poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) and poly(methyl methacrylate-co-acrylonitrile), onto a chitosan backbone [41] Advances in Chemistry to address the variability of the mechanical properties of chitosan films [69]. CE could analyze samples produced along the synthetic pathway.…”

“…In contrast to biopolymers, however, electrophoretic methods have been rarely applied for synthetic polymer analysis. Since general CE method employs an aqueous electrophoretic medium, almost all CE separation have been applied to water‐soluble and charged oligomers and polymers . In addition, nonaqueous (NA) capillary electrophoresis (NACE) has been applied for analysis of water‐insoluble and charged oligomers and polymers .…”
