Heterogeneous electrochemical characteristics of biofilm/metal interface and local electrochemical techniques used for this purpose

Abstract: Biofilms on metal surface in an aqueous environment is a complex electrochemical system. The heterogeneous electrochemical characteristics of biofilm/metal interface and local electrochemical techniques used for this purpose are discussed in this work. The techniques presented in this work include microelectrode, scanning vibrating electrode, the wire beam electrode method, and scanning electrochemical microscopy. Two potentially useful techniques, localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning … Show more

“…Nejnovějším trendem je pak lokální elektrochemická impedanční spektroskopie (LEIS), která umoňuje sledovat tyto charakteristiky v mikroměřítku a vytvářet mapy elektrochemických vlastností povrchu. Tato metoda byla už použita i pro sledování mikrobiální koroze [11,56,73,84].…”

“…However, dynamic behavior of localized corrosion process is still unclear for Q235 carbon steel under SRB biofilm. Electrochemical parameters at local areas of metal surface are fundamental and valuable for characterizing of dynamic behavior of localized corrosion process and understanding of microscopic mechanisms of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) [13].…”

“…However, metabolic activity of microorganisms in inhomogeneous biofilm makes chemical environment near metal surface much different from that in bulk solution, such as ion species, concentration, pH, and oxygen level [17][18][19][20]. In addition, performance of probe tip of both techniques can be affected by absorption of biofilm [13,21]. They are also difficult to measure accurately electrochemical parameters under biofilm.…”

“…Local EIS (LEIS), which is based on the use of microelectrodes and measures the current density in solution above a surface feature (e.g., a corrosion pit or a microbial colony) offers much higher definition at the microscale than global EIS, but its application to mixed species biofilms performing EET is largely unreported 3 . To the best of the author's knowledge, application of LEIS to microbial biofilms has been recently suggested, with no experimental data reported to date [73][74] .…”
