Heterogeneous Catalytic Upgrading of Biofuranic Aldehydes to Alcohols

Abstract: Heterogeneous catalytic conversion of lignocellulosic components into valuable chemicals and biofuels is one of the promising ways for biomass valorization, which well meets green chemistry metrics, and can alleviate environmental and economic issues caused by the rapid depletion of fossil fuels. Among the identified biomass derivatives, furfural (FF) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) stand out as rich building blocks and can be directly produced from pentose and hexose sugars, respectively. In the past decade… Show more

“…Nowadays, fossil fuel resource demand is expanding progressively due to industrial growth and constant population rise. Meanwhile, the utilization of fossil fuels along with environmental pollution and global warming has led to the consideration of alternative energy sources like biofuels (Bhanja and Bhaumik, 2016;Long et al, 2019;Negm et al, 2019;Xu et al, 2019;Li et al, 2020). Among the various biofuels, biodiesel is considered to be the most promising renewable fuel, possibly due to its biodegradable, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly features (Al-Saadi et al, 2018;.…”

“…2 Much industrial interest is associated with three types of biopolymer present in plant cell walls: lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. 3 Hemicellulose is made from branched chains of various sugars including xylose, the majority of which is consumed industrially by up-conversion to yield furfural. 4 Furfural is recognized as a platform molecule that can be utilized for the production of a broad variety of value-added chemicals, including furfuryl alcohol, 2-methylfuran, and the dimer product hydrofuroin.…”

“…The catalytic upgrading of furfurals is one of the most important steps to produce biofuels and renewable chemicals. Among many biomassderived products, furanics have been extensively studied using biocatalysis [14], homoge-Catalysts 2021, 11, 1371 2 of 31 neous [8][9][10][11] and heterogeneous catalysis [15], and electrocatalysis [16] in different reaction media. Furanics can be produced from non-edible biomass and provide opportunities for sustainable new products often with unique properties that can be used, for example, in the polymer, solvent, and surfactant industries [17,18].…”
