Herschel-SPIRE: design, ground test results, and predicted performance

Abstract: SPIRE, the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver, is a submillimetre camera and spectrometer for Herschel. It comprises a three-band camera operating at 250, 350 and 500 μm, and an imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer covering 194-672 μm. The photometer field of view is 4x8 arcmin., viewed simultaneously in the three bands. The FTS has an approximately circular field of view of 2.6 arcmin. diameter and spectral resolution adjustable between 0.04 and 2 cm -1 (λ/Δλ =20-1000 at 250 μm). Following successful… Show more

“…We use telluric transmission models with 0.5 mm and 0.72 mm PWV for APEX and CSO (at band center) respectivelyappropriate for good submillimeter nights at their sites (APEX windows < 300 μm use 0.2 mm). Also plotted is the sensitivity of ZEUS, the published preflight sensitivities of the 3 spectrometers on the Herschel telescope 33,34,35 with HIFI and PACS scaled to the resolving power of ZEUS-2: R = 1000, or Δυ = 300 km s -1 , appropriate for typical extragalactic line widths. ZEUS-2 is ~10 times more sensitive in the primary bands.…”

“…E.g. the HERSCHEL/SPIRE instrument design 6 , which was used as the starting point for SPICA/SAFARI, had two roof-tops. The original SAFARI design 5 had two cat's-eyes, see Figure 1.…”

“…The tests performed at instrument level are described in references [8][9][10]. The tests performed at this level were both environmental tests (Mechanical, Thermal, EMC) for both qualification and acceptance) and performance / calibration tests.…”
