Herpes zoster might be an indicator for latent COVID 19 infection

Abstract: Various cutaneous manifestations have been observed in patients with COVID‐19 infection. Herpes zoster is a viral skin disease caused by varicella zoster that remains dormant in the dorsal root ganglia of cutaneous nerves following a primary chicken pox infection. In this report, we describe two cases COVID infection who first presented with herpes zoster. We are here by suggesting that the clinical presentation of HZ at the time of the current pandemic even in patients giving mild or no suggestive history of … Show more

“…Reactivation of HZ is not frequent in COVID-19 patients, but few cases raised the concerns of the possible association. A report of two cases has demonstrated HZ reactivation preceding the emergence of respiratory symptoms in COVID-19 patients [15]. Moreover, HZ may occur in entirely asymptomatic COVID-19 patients [16].…”

“…Earlier reports have described herpes zoster occurs before or after onset of COVID-19 symptoms with lymphopenia. 7,8 However, in this patient, herpes zoster occurred in the recovery period of COVID-19 and the results of clinical laboratory measurements were almost normal. This observation indicates the variety of COVID-19 and herpes zoster co-occurrence, and the complexity of the underling mechanisms.…”

“…6 Recently, there are case reports of herpes zoster in patients with both symptomatic and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection. 7,8 However, in these cases, no long-term follow up was performed and no postherpetic neuralgia was observed. Here, we report clinical features and treatments of herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia in an elderly patient with critical COVID-19.…”

“…Patients with COVID-19 exhibit mild-moderate symptoms, with about 15% progressing to severe pneumonia and 5% eventually develop ARDS, septic shock and multiple organ failure and few patients are usually asymptomatic. 2 Patients present with fever, cough, breathlessness, diarrhoea, fatigue and some patients develop neurological symptoms like dizziness, headache, impaired consciousness, acute cerebro-vascular disease, seizures, ataxia and peripheral nerve involvement with loss of smell or taste and neuralgias. 3,4 Bell's palsy is defined as an isolated, sudden, peripheral facial paralysis of unknown etiology and patients usually show spontaneous recovery.…”
