Herniation through the foramen of Morgagni in children

Abstract: Eight cases of herniation through the foramen of Morgagni are described. They fell into two distinct groups presenting either as neonatal respiratory distress or as an incidental findings in older children. Diagnosis is essentially radiological, stressing the importance of a lateral film. Surgical repair is advocated. the abdominal approach being perferred. Pneumopericardium is a rare but severe complication.

“…5,7 Mild to severe symptoms may develop, with the most common symptoms and signs being respiratory, mimicking pulmonary infection, chronic cough, choking, and shortness of breath or respiratory distress. [8][9][10][11][12] Gastrointestinal symptoms with abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting may be from compression of the bowel, but incarceration of the intestine in Morgagni hernia is unusual, with few reported cases producing obstruction, [13][14][15] and those mainly in adults.…”

“…This is surprisingly high when compared to other series. 1,6,8,9 The reason for this is not known. An increased awareness among pediatricians and general practitioners is a contributing factor, as the mode of presentation in these patients is variable and nonspecific.…”
