Heritability of morpho-agronomic traits in ornamental pepper

Abstract: This study was conducted to identify the allelic interactions and genetic effects involved in genetic control of quantitative traits in Capsicum annuum. Six generations (P 1 , P 2 , F 1 , F 2 , BC 1 and BC 2) were used to study the variances, means and allelic interactions of 16 quantitative traits evaluated. The additive part of the phenotypic variance found for plant height, number of peppers per plant, days to flowering and days to fruiting lead to the conclusion that phenotypic selection in the F 2 generat… Show more

“…This is important since the ornamental value of the peppers is directly related with permanence of the fruits in the plant. The results for NDF are in accordance with the results obtained by Nascimento et al (2019) working with 6 generations of ornamental pepper plants, which showed values from 38.65 to 95. Silva et al (2015) found results similar to these ones in this study, except for one accession which produced 137.3 fruits; these authors also obtained accessions of NDF ranging from 41.7 to 80.…”

The values of NDF obtained by Nascimento et al (2019) ranged between 15 and 70 days. The studies cited, as well as the results obtained in this experiment, are within the quality standards for commercialization, NFP≥10 (Veilling Holambra, 2018).…”

“…These results also differed from those of Valente et al [11], who reported heritabilities of 34-36%, but this could be the result of using populations with different genetic backgrounds [12,24]. These findings may be explained by the genetic variability in progenies [25].…”

“…The variables that showed the most significant correlation in this study were PH and PD, reported in various studies as characteristics of interest for the cultivation of ornamental peppers (Costa et al, 2021;Nascimento et al, 2019). The Pearson correlation coefficient is a numerical measure that expresses the correlation between two continuous quantitative variables, where values close to 1 or -1 indicate a more strongly correlated relationship (Lu et al, 2023).…”
