Heritability of chemical fat content in the loin muscle of baconers

Abstract: Data on carcasses of 352 Large White baconers by 44 boars were taken from reports of Progeny Testing Stations to estimate the heritability of chemical fat in the loin muscle and of fatty tissue content in the carcass, and their phenotypic and genetic correlations. The heritability of the chemical fat content in the loin muscle was found to be 0·50, that of the fatty tissue content in the carcass 0·69. The genetic correlation between the characteristics under study seems to be very low (rA = 0·11), and their phe… Show more

“…The first heritability (h2) estimates for pig meat quality traits were reported in the early sixties (Duniec et al 1961;Jonsson 1963;Ollivier and MeslC 1963). Since that time, a large number of hZ estimates have been published for the most frequently measured meat quality traits (Lundstrijm 1975;McGloughlin and McLoughlin 1975;Malmfors and Nilsson 1979;Scheper 1979;Tarrant et al 1970;Schworer et al 1980Schworer et al , 1987Ollivier et al 1981;Blum 1983;Just et al 1983;Ollivier 1983;Busse and Groeneveld 1986;Johansson 1987;Merks 1987;Cole et ul.…”

“…Table 6 The distribution in percent of the chemical components in the anatomical fractions There was a positive and significant correlation between percent chemical fat in muscle and amount of fat, percent chemical fat in fat, and percent chemical fat in carcass, which corresponds with JUST (1973). DUNIEC et al (1961), OSINSKA (~~~~) , J E N s E N et a [. (1967) found very low correlations between the fat content in muscle and the backfat thickness and amount of subcutaneous fat.…”

“…Hammond (1,932) indicated a growth gadient pattern of fat deposition similar to that of muscle. callow (1947,1948) and Schijn and Schijn (1964) reported some major differences within and between species in deposition of subcutaneous and intermuscular fat; later reports have dealt with environmental and genetic influences on fat deposition in cattle (Callow and Seafle, l96l;Lndger, 1959) and with some relationships betwe.en subsutaneous and total body fat in swins (Doornenbal, 1967;Duniec et al, 1961).…”
