“…Walsh [6], who referred to the ver tical OKN in congenital vertical nystagmus for the first lime, reported no response of vertical OKN in 2 cases where one was of the pendular and the other of the jerky type. Other authors [6][7][8][9]11] observed no response of vertical OKN in congenital vertical nystag mus and none of them presented the raw figures of the OKN pattern except von Dichgans and Kornhuber [8] and Iwashita et al [11], The case of I washita et al [ 11 ], who had congenital vertical nystagmus of the jerky type, was the first to show inversion of the direction in vertical OKN. It is thought that to establish the diagnosis of congenital verti cal nystagmus firmly, the cases should be supported at least by 3 main features: early advent of the nystagmus, no other neurologi cal abnormalities and an abnormal OKN.…”

“…Characteristically, the dominant eye movements are bilateral and horizontal, although on occasion a vertical nystagmus, which usually signifies an acquired disorder, has been reported as being inherited (Forsythe, 1955;Marmor, 1973). The intensity (amplitude x frequency) of the nystagmus may vary enormously from individual to individual, and it may alter for each direction of gaze (Dell'Osso, 1973;Abadi and Sandikcioglu, 1974).…”
