Herbicides and Pesticides as Potential Pollutants: A Global Problem

Abstract: Herbicides and pesticides have been used to control, eliminate or destroy pests in order to protect human being's food. This technology could be economical and effective if the selection of herbicides and pesticides is based on its mode of action, chemical nature, method and time of application and nature of crop. They have been extensively studied for their toxic potential to biological systems. Herbicides and pesticides are gradually more water soluble, polar and heat stable, therefore it is difficult to red… Show more

“…The agriculture sector exploits different kind of pesticides, herbicides, and antimicrobial [ 24 , 25 ] substances to control plant diseases. These substances are responsible for soil pollution as well as biomagnification in living organisms [ 26 , 27 ]. Despite photocatalytic activity, CuNPs attracted more attention due to its nontoxic, antimicrobial efficacy in controlling plant diseases.…”

“…Pesticides are usually classified into three major categories: herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides/bactericides. The application of pesticides is used to con-trol weeds, pest outbreaks, and fungal infestations for the security of global food supply [15,39,40]. The worldwide pesticide expenditures increased from $48.8 billion in 2008 to $55.9 billion in 2012 [41].…”

“…Specifically, herbicides are more water soluble, polar and thermally stable than other contaminants. They have harmful effects on soil, flora and fauna, surface and ground water, which may eventually enter the human being and livestock's food chain [3].…”
