Herbal medicines for treating acute otitis media: A systematic review of randomised controlled trials

Abstract: Despite some indications of potential symptom improvement, the evidence regarding the effectiveness and efficacy of herbal medicine for acute otitis media is inconclusive due to the poor quality of trials included. Moreover, we only analysed seven trials in this review. Therefore, to properly evaluate the effectiveness of herbal medicine for acute otitis media, systematic reviews based on more rigorously designed randomized trials are warranted in the future.

“…Obviously, the choice of halving the full dosage is much dominant in our hospital probably due to its convenience and the conventional thinking of half dose reduction in children. Nevertheless, such xation in Sinupret drops dosage may not be appropriate for younger pediatric patients, and further dosage adjustment based on the age (especially at age 3 and below) should be performed for exibility [9].…”

“…In China, it is principally used to alleviate clinical symptoms such as splenic and gastric inadequacy, anorexia, loose motions, shortness of breath, cough, and limb fatigue. To date, several pharmacological studies have been published relating to SLBZP, as shown in Table 1, suggesting that it can exert therapeutic effects on several gastrointestinal diseases via a spectrum of pharmacological approaches [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. A systematic review of studies evaluating the treatment of IBS with SLBZP indicated that the mixture was safe and effective in enhancing the cure rate of IBS and diminishing the severity of diarrhea, abdominal pain, and distension [14].…”
