Herbal compounds for rheumatoid arthritis: Literatures review and cheminformatics prediction

Abstract: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic disease characterized by autoimmunity, joint inflammation, and cartilage destruction, which affects 0.5–1% of the population. Many compounds from herbal medicines show the potentials to treat RA. On this basis, the compounds with good pharmacokinetic behaviors and drug‐likeness properties will be further studied and developed. Therefore, the herbal compounds with anti‐RA activities were reviewed in this paper, and the cheminformatics tools were used to predict their drug… Show more

“…The water solubility of the compounds can influence their efficacy in vivo. The good aqueous solubility can facilitate the molecules dispersing into biological body fluids, thereby expediting their absorption and distribution processes [112]. Water solubility assessment showed that most of herbal compounds (38/43) were soluble in water (> − 4 log mol/L), while five of 43 molecules were low soluble in water (< − 4 log mol/L, Table 2).…”

“…Modern pharmacological researches demonstrated that the effective active ingredients in Chinese medicine could weaken the activity of RA and protect joints from deformity [ 6 ]. In TCM theory, RA belongs to the category of therapeutic concept “Bi Zheng ”, which is related to the deficiency of vital qi as well as the invasion of “wind (feng)”, “cold (han)”, “damp (shi)”, “stasis (yu)” and other evil qi [ 7 , 8 ]. TCM can regulate the body function as a whole through a multifaceted approach and multiple mechanisms [ 9 ], therefore, it usually adopts the principles of warming the meridian, dispersing the cold and relieving the pain in RA treatment.…”

“…Currently available anti-rheumatic drugs, including non-steroidal drugs, glucocorticoids, and biological agents, cannot cure RA radically but only relieve its symptoms and progression [4,5]. In China, herbal medicines have been extensively utilized as alternative RA drugs for decades [6,7]. However, the traditional herbs contain a lot of ingredients which may result in serious side-effects [8].…”
