“…War things tell remarkable stories: broadly speaking, war mementoes may embody both an absence and a presence – a survival or a loss. Both presences and absences animate, in different ways, memories and mementoes of the Italian resistance and civil war (see also Koskinen-Koivisto, 2014; Meyers and Woodthorpe, 2008). Absences and presences coexist in memories of the war beyond objects, such as stories, place-based recollections and performances; in a way, stories form war things’ most meaningful and powerful iteration, so much so that Ricoeur (1991: 115) argues that, through telling stories, we may ‘give “shape” to what remains chaotic, obscure and mute’.…”
