Hepatoprotective Role of Ethanolic Extract ofVitex negundoin Thioacetamide-Induced Liver Fibrosis in Male Rats

Abstract: The hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic extract from the leaves of Vitex negundo (VN) was conducted against thioacetamide- (TAA-) induced hepatic injury in Sprague Dawley rats. The therapeutic effect of the extract was investigated on adult male rats. Rats were divided into seven groups: control, TAA, Silymarin (SY), and VN high dose and low dose groups. Rats were administered with VN extract at two different doses, 100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg body weight. After 12 weeks, the rats administered with VN showed a … Show more

“…In the article titled “Hepatoprotective Role of Ethanolic Extract of Vitex negundo in Thioacetamide-Induced Liver Fibrosis in Male Rats” [1], there was figure duplication in Figure 1, which showed the appearance of livers. Figure 1(b) is the same as Figure 1, TAA, in another article by the same group, Amin et al [2], and Figures 1(f) and 1(g) in [1] are the same.…”

“…[47] Moreover, the observed alterations in serum AST, ALT, ALP, CK, and LDH activity and total bilirubin levels are good indicators for hepatic injury resulting from cellular leakage and the loss in functional integrity of the cell membrane in liver. [48] Cellular damages are identified by increases in serum ALP, ALT, and AST levels in that these enzymes are in the cytoplasm and after cellular damage, enters blood circulation. [49] This is due to the increased permeability of the plasma membrane or cellular necrosis leading to leakage of the enzymes into the blood stream.…”

“…Significant anti-fungal [6] and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been reported [7]. Alcoholic extract of the seeds is reported for hepatoprotective activity against CCl 4 [8], leaves against anti-tubercular drugs and thioacetamide induced hepatotoxicity [9,10].…”
