Hepatocellular carcinoma with steatohepatitic features: a clinicopathological study of Japanese patients

Abstract: SH-HCC is a subcategory of HCC associated with the patient's metabolic condition and the presence of steatosis or steatohepatitis in the background liver. Steatohepatitic features were not a significant prognostic factor for HCCs.

“…However, we only identified DM history to be significantly associated with SH‐HCC in the three groups of patients with HCC, while hypertension, high serum CHO, and TG levels were not. Thus, our data differ slightly from the two published reports 37, 38. Because SH‐HCC has not been found to be associated with prognosis, its clinical significance will need further study.…”

“…The background livers in most cases show steatosis or steatohepatitis. In many tumors, however, the steatohepatitic changes are more striking in the tumor than in the background nonneoplastic liver tissues [ 106 ].…”

“…Patients with NAFLD-related cirrhosis have an increased risk of developing HCC with incidence of 2-3% per year [35]. A recently described histological variant of HCC, steatohepatitic HCC, is characterized by HCC exhibiting features of steatohepatitis [steatosis in more than 5% of tumour cells, hepatocellular ballooning, Mallory-Denk bodies, intratumoral inflammatory infiltrate and perisinusoidal fibrosis], and associated with underlying NAFLD and metabolic risks [36,37] (Figure 2I). …”
