Hepatobiliary Tumors: Update on Diagnosis and Management

Abstract: Tumors of the liver and biliary tree, mainly hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma, are the second leading cause of cancer related death worldwide and the sixth leading cause of cancer related death among men in developed countries. Recent developments in biomarkers and imaging modalities have enhanced early detection and accurate diagnosis of these highly fatal malignancies. These advances include serological testing, micro-ribonucleic acids, fluorescence in situ hybridization, contrast-enhanced ult… Show more

“…In addition, patients with malignancy might largely benefit from taking regular nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin 39,40. Additionally, HBV infection is closely related to HCC occurring in the East and mediate the consistent expression of HBV immunogenic proteins, resulting in a potent systematic inflammatory 2. Similar to previous results in our study, we observed that the patients with HBV infection had significantly worse OS compared with counterparts with no HBV infection.…”

“…Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent malignancies, with increasing incidence and mortality worldwide 1,2. Curative resection, which might significantly ameliorate the prognosis of patients with HCC, is a potentially effective treatment strategy.…”

“…However, in the worldwide, the 5-year overall survival (OS) rate of HCC is only 7% 2 . To date, many serum biomarkers, such as α-fetoprotein (AFP), γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT), and (carcino-embryonic antigen) CEA, have been used to predict the survival of HCC patents 3 , 4 . Especially, AFP is the widely used tumor biomarker for HCC prognosis.…”

“…Clinical features of the disease are determined by location and clinical stage. CCAs are divided by location from the surgical perspective into intrahepatic and extrahepatic types [3, 4]. On the other hand, clinical staging which is essential for treatment and prognosis [5], depends on size, lymph node invasion, and metastasis to other tissues.…”
