Hepatitis C virus infection in patients with non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma

Abstract: Hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is both a hepatotropic and a lymphotropic virus, has been proposed as a possible causative agent of mixed cryoglobulinaemia. This 'benign' lymphoproliferative disorder can switch over to a malignant B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Therefore HCV infection has been investigated in a series of 50 unselected Italian patients with B-cell NHL. Antibodies against HCV were found in 30% of NHL and HCV viraemia in 32% of cases. HCV-related markers were detected in 34% (17/50) of our N… Show more

“…Thus, as in other studies (37,38), diffuse large B cell lymphoma was the most frequent type in our control population of patients with HCV. The predominance of MALT lymphoma in SS-HCV and primary SS but not in HCV suggests an important role for SS in the lymphomagenesis of patients with SS-HCV.…”

“…Infection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells with HCV is a useful parameter in the pathogenesis of HCV infection [40]. Although some investigators believe HCV plays a role in the pathogenesis of NHL, some others refuse this explanation [8,9,25,26,30,[43][44][45]. The presence of viral material in lymphoma samples is not sufficient due to the lymphotropism of this virus.…”

“…Besides, an important association has been demonstrated between HCV and lymphoproliferative disorders. Many studies have shown an increased prevalence of HCV infection in patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (B-NHL), and the prevalence is between 9% and 32% [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. In these studies, HCV has been tested serologically, but today the prevalence of HCV in lymphoproliferative disorders is not known.…”

“…7 On the basis of its prevalence among 537 patients with different lymphoproliferative disorders, 180 with MGUS (monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance), and 470 with B cell NHL, we previously identified the B cell NHL (in particular the immunocytoma) associated with the production of cryoglobulins (in particular type II), as the probable pathogenetic target of HCV. [8][9][10][11] Since several investigators have reported on the significance of specific HCV genotypes as determinants of liver disease severity and responsiveness to interferon-␣ (IFN), [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] one might speculate on the involvement of particular viral genotypes in the pathogenesis, clinical features and response to therapy of HCV-related B cell NHL.…”
