Hepatitis B Vaccination Coverage Levels Among Healthcare Workers in the United States, 2002-2003

Abstract: In the United States, an estimated 75% of HCWs have been vaccinated against hepatitis B. Important differences in coverage levels exist among various demographic groups. Hospitals need to identify methods to improve hepatitis B vaccination coverage levels and should consider developing targeted vaccination programs directed at unvaccinated, at-risk HCWs who have frequent or potential exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material.

“…This rate is similar to the estimate of 75.0% vaccination coverage against hepatitis B among American hospital HWs. 18 The results also approach those observed among hospital workers (73.5%), 6 laboratory professionals (74.5%), 17 dentists (75.0%) 15 and workers who were victims of accidents with biological material (72.8%) in Brazil. 1 However, vaccinal coverage in some subgroups may reach lower frequencies, for example 64.6% among primary care HWs in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina 11 and 65.6% of the anesthesiologists in Goiânia, GO.…”

“…In United States, according to one study 75% of HCWs at risk had received 3 or more doses of hepatitis B vaccine [15]. In Sweden, 79% of HCWs had received at least one dose of vaccine, but only 40% were reported to be fully vaccinated [16].…”

“…5,6 In addition, influenza vaccination occurs annually, while hepatitis B vaccination is a one-time, three-dose series. And although hepatitis B vaccination rates for HCP are currently estimated to be about 75%, 15 which is higher than the HCP influenza vaccination rate, it is still well below the national goal for HCP hepatitis B vaccination of 98%. 16 Initial reports suggest that use of declination forms for HCP influenza vaccination can be effective in some settings, [17][18][19] but this has not been demonstrated broadly.…”
