Hepatitis B and hepatitis D virus infections in the Central African Republic, twenty-five years after a fulminant hepatitis outbreak, indicate continuing spread in asymptomatic young adults

Abstract: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) increases morbidity in Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected patients. In the mid-eighties, an outbreak of HDV fulminant hepatitis (FH) in the Central African Republic (CAR) killed 88% of patients hospitalized in Bangui. We evaluated infections with HBV and HDV among students and pregnant women, 25 years after the fulminant hepatitis (FH) outbreak to determine (i) the prevalence of HBV and HDV infection in this population, (ii) the clinical risk factors for HBV and/or HDV infections, and… Show more

“…This result is close similar to 8.2% in the Central African Republic that was reported by Komas et al [19], but it is higher than 5.6%, 5.1%, and 7.5% that reported by Elsheikh et al, Osman et al,and Abuelgasim [13,15,16] at the Omdurman Maternity Hospital, central Sudan and Khartoum Teaching Hospital, respectively. However, it is much lower that the result of El Gasim et al [17] who found 18% positive cases for HBsAg among pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in Al Fashir, North Darfur State.…”

“…HBeAg, hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg), and the core-related protein p22 are all proteins produced by the pre-core/core HBV gene and they share the same 149 amino acid sequence; therefore, quantification of the HBV core-related antigen (HBcrAg) has been shown to be more accurate (Hadziyannis and Laras, 2018) than HBeAg serology alone. Co-infection with HDV was found in 23 of the 118 patients, a prevalence similar to that reported previously in CAR (Komas et al, 2018).…”

“…70 In both countries there were large regional variations. In the Central African Republic, 50% of patients with chronic HBsAg-positive hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were anti-HD positive between 1998 and 2010 71,72 and, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, 26.1% of HBsAg-positive patients with jaundice were seropositive in 2017. 73 In Asia, the rate of HDV is high in the central part of the continent (Fig.…”
