Background: In 2019, the WHO estimated that over 296 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and over 820,000 deaths attributable to hepatitis B. Most people living with HBV are unaware of their immune status and live in endemic areas. This is the case of Benin and Senegal, which have little data on the disease. Objective: This study aimed to provide epidemiological furthers on hepatitis B in Dakar and Cotonou according to WHO recommendations about "obtaining data for action". Materials and Methods: Our study took place at the Medical Biology Laboratory of the Idrissa Pouye General Hospital (LBM-HOGIP) in Dakar, Senegal. Participants were selected at the LBM-HOGIP of Dakar or at the LBMs of the health centres of the Archdiocese of Cotonou respectively from November to December 2019 and February to March 2020. All participants were tested for hepatitis B virus antigen (HBsAg) using a microparticle chemiluminescence immunoassay assay. Other risk factors including blood transfusion, haemodialysis, tattooing, cultural or clan scarification, piercing, injecting drug use, unprotected sex and surgical procedures were also investigated. Informed consent was obtained from each participant. The study was approved by the ethics committees in Senegal and Benin. For the biological tests, Excel and IBM SPSS Statistics software were used for the analysis of the results. Results: A total of 470 participants were recruited including 234 in Cotonou and 236 in Dakar. The median age in Cotonou was 29 years with extremes of 10 and 65 years, and 38 years in Dakar with extremes of 6 and 93 years. The prevalence of HBsAg was 12.39% in Cotonou and 19.91% in Dakar. Our study aimed to describe epidemiological and diagnostic features in an outpatient's cohort with chronic HBeAg-negative hepatitis B. Patients and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with a retrospective data collection was implemented from January 2004 to April 2016 in the hepato-gastroenterology department of the University Teaching Hospital Yalgado Ouédraogo (CHU-YO) in Burkina Faso. Results: Overall 325 HBeAg negative patients met the inclusion criteria. The sex ratio was 1.5 and the mean age 38.7 years. The most frequent circumstance of diagnosis was the health check-up (54.5%). The mean HBsAg concentration and viral load were 7861.6 IU/mL and 32 237.20 IU/mL, respectively. Low or moderate inflammatory activity was found in 44% and 24% of patients, respectively at the liver biopsy; 32% presented a portal fibrosis with some septa (F2). 43.9% and 41.6% had low (A1) or moderate (A2) inflammatory activity, respectively at the hepatic fibrosis blood test, while 59.1% and 20.4% had low (F1) or moderate (F2) fibrosis stage, respectively. Of the five biochemical and virological profiles among the untreated patients, the profile 1 represented 67.2% of the sample. Conclusion:The proportions of negative HBeAg in chronic hepatitis B patients are increasing in Burkina Faso. Most of the patients have a high viral load, a low to moderate inflammatory activity or fibrosis stage.

Background: Hepatitis B is a vaccine-preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus. The study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of hepatitis B infection in adolescents and youth attending secondary school in Covè, urban area in Benin. Methods: From 4 th to 10 th February 2018, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among adolescents and youth aged 15 to 24 years old. Subjects were randomly selected. Hepatitis B surface antigenaemia (HBsAg) was assayed in blood using rapid enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Results: Two hundred adolescents and youth were recruited. The seroprevalence of hepatitis B virus infection was 18.50%. According to the multivariate logistic regression model, being infected by hepatitis B was 4.32 times higher in the age group of 15 -19 years old than in 20 -24 years age group (PR = 4.32 95% CI [1.51 -12.34], p = 0.0063). Similarly, students who had not been aware of hepatitis B were more infected than those who were sensitized , p = 0.0001). With regard to lifestyle, individuals with tattoos or piercings were 8.60 times more likely to have been infected by HBV than those without tattoos or piercings, (PR = 8.60;], p < 0.0001). Conclusion: The seroprevalence of hepatitis B among adolescents and youth attending secondary school was high. Regular screening of HVB infection status should be included in school health services in Benin. Awareness campaigns and health education on HVB transmission and prevention should be promoted and strengthened.
