Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (Hantaviruses)

Abstract: Hantaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses belonging to the genus Hantavirus, family Bunyaviridae. These agents are usual parasites of wild rodents and insectivores. Many species worldwide are infected with these viruses and each Hantavirus type is carried by its own type specific rodent species. Human transmission occurs accidentally by inhalation of aerosolized virus containing particles, contact with urine, feces or secretions of infected rodents. Hantavirus leads to two type of zoonotic infections; Hemorrhagic… Show more

“…HPS is observed in North-America, Mexico and Panama (New World Hanta) with very high mortality rate up to 30–40% within 24–48 h of admission ( 32 , 33 ). Hantavirus and other rodent borne disease like leptospirosis have been implicated as one of the potential explanation for Mesoamerican nephropathy ( 34 ). No specific therapy is available for Hantavirus infection, management remains conservative and preventive strategies with vaccination are limited as an approved vaccine for Hantavirus infection is still underway.…”

“…CMV and EBV can cause acute immune-complex GN and a membranous lesion has been the most common histology reported ( 34 ). Respiratory viral infections such as respiratory syncitial virus, influenza, para-influenza, and varicella, have been associated with relapse of MCD ( 40 ).…”

“…Fever is one of the usual clinical features that appear during the course of several infectious diseases, such as chikungunya fever caused by Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) (1), Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) (2) or Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) (3,4) caused by several members of the Hantavirus (HTV) genus, uncomplicated malaria fever caused by Plasmodium falciparum infection (5), enteric fever caused by Salmonella serovars (6), cat scratch fever caused by Bartonella spp. (7), or is a common symptom in infants or adolescents affected by pulmonary tuberculosis due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (8), among other type of infectious diseases.…”

“…Hantaviruses can cause potentially fatal diseases in humans, such as Hantavirus Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) and Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) also known as Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome (HCPS). Hantaviruses are negative-sense RNA viruses that belong to the Bunyaviridae family [1][2][3]. Epidemiologically HFRS is a rare disease in Albania, but time after time there are cases reported [4].…”
