Hemorheological and cerebroprotective activity of Lychnis chalcedonica L. extract in rats with cerebral ischemia

Abstract: Considerable hemorheological changes and depression of EEG parameters were revealed in rats with cerebral ischemia. Course peroral treatment with scarlet lightning extract in a daily dose of 150 mg/kg for 5 days reduced the severity of hemorheological disorders. It manifested in a decrease in whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, erythrocyte aggregation, and fibrinogen concentration and increase in deformability. The extract of lightning extract improved EEG activity in rats with cerebral ischemia.

“…On the other hand, this extract contributes to recovery of a normal discoid shape in erythrocytes with reversible transitional changes. RCE increases the number of disc cells in the peripheral blood, which improves erythrocyte deformability (key parameter of blood rheology) [6]. This characteristic is typical only of disc cells.…”

“…Rhaponticum carthamoides extract (RCE) is one of the most potent plant ecdysteroid-containing preparations. The extract prevents changes in erythrocyte deformability on the model of cerebral ischemia [6]. However, the mechanism underlying the action of RCE on erythrocytes is poorly understood.…”

“…Aqueous extracts of the plant were also tested for their antibacterial and antifungal activities Bourgeois 1978, Gardan et al 1978). Recently, the extract of L. chalcedonica was observed to improve hemorheological and cerebroprotective properties in rats with cerebral ischemia (Plotnikov et al 2005). Therefore, the development of an in vitro protocol will be of great importance for conservation and sustainable utilization of this species.…”
