Hemoglobin levels and quality of life in patients with symptomatic chemotherapy-induced anemia: the eAQUA study

Abstract: PurposeTo assess hemoglobin (Hb) outcomes and fatigue-related quality-of-life (QoL) (electronic assessment) in patients with solid tumors and symptomatic chemotherapy-induced anemia receiving cytotoxic chemotherapy and darbepoetin alfa (DA) or another erythropoiesis-stimulating agent according to European indication.MethodseAQUA was a Phase IV prospective observational study. The primary outcome (assessed in the primary analysis set [PAS]: patients receiving one or more DA dose who had baseline and week 9 asse… Show more

“…In our meta-analysis, although the Hb rise by 7.15 g/L is statistically significant, this rise is still considered below the defined clinical meaningful hemoglobin-concentration increase (≥1 g/dL) [ 74 ]. Interestingly, this modest Hb increase was associated with meaningful transfusion reduction.…”

“…To this end, several studies using MDASI or the FACT-An reported differential symptom burdens by Hb level based on patient self-report, 10,11,19 including data on improvement in symptom burden and quality of life after anemia was amended with the use of ESA. 20,21 We found that the number of pre-existing symptoms was significantly higher in patients who went on to develop CIA than in patients who did not develop CIA. Specifically, fatigue, loss of appetite, and pale skin before chemotherapy seemed to be significantly more common in patients who went on to develop CIA.…”
