Hemodialysis in Asia

Abstract: Background: Asia is the largest, most populous and most heterogeneous continent in the world. The number of patients with end-stage renal disease is growing rapidly in Asia. Summary: A fully informed report on the status of dialysis therapies including hemodialysis (HD) is limited by the lack of systematic registries. Available data suggest remarkable heterogeneities, with some countries like Taiwan, Japan and Korea exhibiting well-established HD systems, high prevalence and universal access to all patients, w… Show more

“…ESRD is a global health burden, and patients with ESRD need renal replacement therapy to maintain their lives; hemodialysis is the major RRT used thought the world [14]. Global prevalence of maintenance dialysis was 284 per million population in 2010, and there was nearly 70% increase compared to 165 per million population in 1990 [15].…”

“…The global prevalence and incidence of maintenance dialysis are increasing [1,2]. World Bank and World Health Organization data show that, by 2030, 2.16 million people in Asia will need renal replacement therapy (RRT), an increase of 223% [3]. Among the modalities of RRT, maintenance hemodialysis (HD) has been a major method worldwide for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) [2,4].…”

“…Importantly, also for the Asia-Pacific population, the proposed algorithms need to be used only in conjunction with a thorough clinical examination and caution should be used in patients with immunosuppression, autoimmune diseases, cystic fibrosis, pancreatitis, trauma, pregnancy and high-volume transfusion [42][43][44][45]. As there are higher prevalence of chronic liver disease and chronic kidney disease in Asia-Pacific countries, interpretation of PCT results in these patient populations may warrant caution [46]. Evidence shows that PCT tests are sufficiently accurate in differentiating bacterial infection from other causes of febrile illness in patients with liver cirrhosis [47].…”
