Hemocyte production in Biomphalaria glabrata snails after exposure to different Schistosoma mansoni infection protocols

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine the profile of the cellular defense system during mansonic infection. Specifically, this study assessed the number of hemocytes that were produced and released into the hemolymph in response to the parasitic infection. The quantification of the Biomphalaria glabrata hemocytes was performed on groups of snails at 1, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 days post-infection that had been individually infected with 5, 10, 15 or 30 Schistosoma mansoni miracidia. The results revealed that… Show more

“…Eissa et al 10 understand the processes leading to parasitic infection, and to determine the processes that make the snails resistant or susceptible to the parasite infection 26 . Hemocytes have the ability to encapsulate foreign organisms as the result of the adaptations of their cytoskeletal mobility and their plasma membranes 27 . In the present study, the evaluation of hemocytes denoted that S. mansoni infected snails had higher significant increase in hemocyte production comparable with treated-infected snail groups with miltefosine and artemether.…”

“…Evaluation of the number of hemocytes in the hemolymph is usually expressed as the THC, while morphological differences among hemocytes is expressed as the DHC (Barracco et al, 1993;Donaghy et al, 2009;Comesana et al, 2012). glabrata, where the THC was significantly reduced at 5 h after infection with S. mansoni (Bezerra et al, 1997;Santos et al, 2011) and reduced at 4 h up to 72 h after infection with A.…”

“…Experimental studies have emphasized the positive effect of parasitic infections on the number of hemocytes in the hemolymph of various species (McReath et al, 1982;Bezerra et al, 1997;Ordas et al, 2000;Oliveira et al, 2010;Santos et al, 2011;Barcante et al, 2012). Furthermore, differences in the cell proportion occur often.…”
