Hemispheric Language Asymmetry in First Episode Psychosis and Schizotypy: The Role of Cannabis Consumption and Cognitive Disorganization

Abstract: Cannabis use has been related to an elevated psychosis risk and attenuated cognitive functioning. Cannabis-related cognitive impairments are also observed in populations along the psychosis dimension. We here investigated whether a potential behavioral marker of the psychosis dimension (attenuated functional hemispheric asymmetry) is even further attenuated in individuals using cannabis (CU) vs those not using cannabis (nCU). We tested 29 patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP; 11 CU) and 90 healthy contro… Show more

“…Such work is critically needed to identify domains where schizotypy differs from schizophrenia, pointing to protective or compensatory mechanisms. 8 see also Herzig et al 10 Second, people with high levels of schizotypy display maladaptive behaviors, such as smoking 11 and drug use, 12 and they suffer lower social, educational, and professional levels of functioning, impoverished quality of life, and high levels of distress 13,14 (also see Cohen et al 15 as well as Mohr and Claridge 16 ). Therefore, schizotypy is an important research topic in its own right because a characterization of cognitive and neural processes in schizotypy may improve our mechanistic understanding of these disturbances and aid the development of intervention strategies.…”

“…As all the resilient rats identified by our classifier included 0crit, most of the 1crit and no 3crit rats, whereas all the rats identified as vulnerable included 3crit and most of the 2crit but no 0crit rats (Cocaine_crit_correspondence.xlsx, Alcohol_crit_correspondence.xlsx), it can be suggested that the present classifier does not yet provide the dimensional granularity necessary to distinguish several levels of severity (2crit vs 3crit) within the vulnerable population, thereby warranting further research to determine whether the addition of endophenotypes (Belin et al, 2008(Belin et al, , 2011Jadhav et al, 2017Jadhav et al, , 2018 to our classifiers will enable them to fully comply with the dimensional nature of the debilitating condition that is SUD. This could contribute to the several initiatives to identify clinically relevant subtypes of SUD (Leggio et al, 2009) through cluster analysis of patients to better capture the clinical heterogeneity (Blanco et al, 2013;Herzig et al, 2015;Kupfer et al, 2008;Kwako et al, 2016Kwako et al, , 2019 with the aim of advancing personalized medicine (Mann & Hermann, 2010;Witkiewitz et al, 2019).…”

“…However, the PANSS Disorganization/Concrete subscale has been successfully used in other empirical studies investigating thought and language disorder in patients with psychosis (e.g. Herzig et al, 2015). Second, the measure used to assess role functioning mixes aspects of psychopathology and socio-occupational functioning.…”
