“…After 10 days treatment at the two higher doses, skin lesions appeared on the backs of some animals but none of the animals died. Other effects including hematological abnormalities, decreased iron and hemoglobin levels, and hypokalaemia have been reported in the literature in response to high levels of gossypol (Tone & Jensen 1974;Skutches et al 1974) but were not monitored in this study.…”

“…These parameters fell to below normal values by day 14. Iron injection showed a normal erythrocyte population in rats treated with gossypol (Tone and Jensen, 1974). When hamsters inhaled gossypol in aerosol form (in sterile deionized water at concentrations of 0.1-1.0mg/l00ml) it caused damage to the epithelial cells of the airway all the way to the respiratory bronchioles.…”

“…Iron dextran injected into the peritoneal cavity of the rat simultaneously with corn oil containing gossypol was partially effective in preventing the growth depression resulting from the injected gossypol (Clawson et al, 1962). When iron was injected with gossypol in rats, the animals showed a normal erythrocyte population whereas gossypol alone showed an increase in erythrocytes (Tone and Jensen, 1974). Gossypol reduces the uptake of iron by everted segments of rat duodenum when it is present with the iron simultaneously in the mucosal medium (Herman and Smith, 1975).…”
