“…In PZQ‐treated fish, the antioxidant system seemed to maintain a balance of production and scavenging of ROS and prevented oxidative damage to tissues. Studies have reported effects of antiparasitic treatments on oxidative stress and biomarkers in hepatic and muscle tissue in fish and parasites (Pena‐Llopis, Ferrando, & Pena, ; Tancredo et al., ).…”

“…However, antioxidant containing compound can quench this harmful effect of free radicals by giving out their own electrons to stop the chain of reaction. Some studies had demonstrated that the antioxidant enzymes can serve as stress and immune – response biomarkers, quantified by the enzyme activity to evaluate the health of animal including fish (Sagstad, Sanden, Haugland, Hansen, Olsvik & Hemre ; Tovar‐Ramı′rez, Mazurais, Gatesoupe, Quazuguel, Cahu & Zambonino‐Infante ; Tancredo, Eduardo, Brum, Acchile, Gabriela, Scheila & Mauricio ). They are also said to scavenge free radicals generated by external stimuli such as pathogen, toxicant, etc.…”

“…Certain studies have identified this protozoan as the cause of mortality for this fish (Garcia et al 2011;Martins et al 2011), which does not have scales, similar to other siluriformes such as the channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, the African catfish Clarias gariepinus, and the striped sorubim, which are also frequently affected by this parasite (Osman et al 2009;Xu et al 2012;Jerônimo et al 2013). Brazilian researchers have recently studied the development of vaccines against this parasite in the silver catfish (Tancredo et al 2015), a strategy that has been shown to be effective in goldfish Carassius auratus (Zhang et al 2009) and channel catfish (Martins et al 2011), and could potentially improve the production of South American fish. Regarding the opportunistic pathogens, Aeromonas, Vibrio and Edwardsiella were isolated from external injuries and kidneys of the silver catfish (Costa et al 2008).…”
