Hematinic effect of fruits of Opuntia elatior Mill. on phenylhydrazine-induced anemia in rats

Abstract: Introduction:The fruits of Opuntia elatior Mill. are known as prickly pear and folkloric use as hematinic, anti-inflammatory and antiasthmatic action. Previously, the fruit juice of prickly pear was evaluated in reversed anemia induced by HgCl2 in a dose dependant manner and present study revealed about its effect in acute hemolytic anemia.Aim:To evaluate the hematinic activity of fruits of Opuntia elatior Mill.Materials and Methods:The hematinic activity of an orally administered fruit juice was studied on ph… Show more

“…The Hb % was significantly increased (P<0.05) in fruit juice treated rats, compared to the standard. This might be due to increased erythropoiesis and/or antioxidant property of betacyanin [34,35]. In a study on carboplatin induced anemia, Opuntia Swarasa at dose levels 1.8 and 3.6 ml/kg showed a good percentage of recovery in haemoglobin, 19.66% and 36.99% respectively, in TRBC, 38.53% and 47.69% respectively, which is higher than the standard carboplatin treated group [36].…”

“…and served as negative control, Group B was left untreated, Group C received 100 mg/kg of dried aqueous Telfairia occidentalis extract (TOLE) after suspension in distilled water, Group D received 100 mg/kg of FP per oral; the tablet was crushed and a preparation of 10 mg/kg was made in distilled water then a dose of 100 mg/kg was orally administered. Group E received 0.2 mg/kg ferrous sulphate per oral and served as the positive control; the tablet was crushed and dissolved in distilled water to obtain a concentration of 2 mg/mL according to the method of Chauhan et al, (2015). Oral administration was done using a gavage needle.…”

“…Two billion people suffer from anemia worldwide and most of them have iron deficiency and hemolytic anemia due to toxicants and oxidants. About 70-80% of the world population, particularly in the developing countries, rely on nonconventional medicine like dietary supplements and herbal remedies in their primary healthcare [1].…”

“…Iron deficiency is a silent condition that causes anemia only when hemoglobin synthesis results impaired represents one of the major causes of anemia and affects around 20-30% of adults worldwide [1] The relationship between anemia and the severity of covid-19 pneumonia is that's; compare to patients without anemia, patients with anemia were more comorbidities and sever covid-19 illness, as well as higher mortality covid-19 patients with anemia were predisposed to more sever inflammatory responses, coagulation disorders and organs injuries [4].…”
